Lions Put Out the Dragons Fire

The Lions didn’t put up a lot of points in Saturday’s match-up against the Lane College Dragons, but they did pick up a big win. Langston University defeated Lane College (NCAA Division II) 13-0 taking their record to 3-1 on the year. The night wasn’t recognized as senior night, but the Lions’ seniors definitely dominated the game.

Raytron Mayfield and Danny Lowery, both seniors from Dallas, Tex., had great games versus the Dragons. Mayfield finished the game with 135 yards on 10 catches and one touchdown. Lowery threw for 182 yards and one touchdown. Carlos Ross led the ground attack for the Lions with 68 yards on 14 carries.

The Langston defense caused Lane to turn over the ball three times and sacked Dragon’s quarterback Sherard Ellis five times. The Lions defense was led by seniors Jahmikal Edwards and Brandon Kennard. Edwards finished the game with 11 tackles and Kennard finished with seven tackles, including two sacks for a loss of nine yards. Two more seniors added to the defense’s punishment of Lane College. Darnell Brown got his fifth interception of the season and James Pierce, the reigning Mr. Langston, picked off his first pass in 2008.
Derrick Brooks, Ross’ younger brother, once again proved to be a big threat on special teams. Brooks broke for a 50-yard return on the game. He is currently ranked sixth in the NAIA in punt return yards.

Both teams were heavily penalized during the game. In fact, Lane appeared to score twice on the day, once on a trick field goal attempt and on a deep pass from the quarterback, but both plays were called back due to Lane College penalties.  Lane finished with 15 penalties for 119 yards and Langston had 11 penalties for 113 yards. Langston is currently ranked second in the NAIA in penalty yards per game.

The Lions will travel next weekend to Grambling, La. to face the Grambling State University Tigers. GSU (2-2) will be coming off of a 14-5 win over Jackson State University when the Lions roll into town. The game in Grambling is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. For ticket information, call (318) 274-2625.
